Wednesday, May 15 - Fallacy commercials due.  All students will turn in completed commercial handout and all students will be ready to present commericals.

Lesson Plans - Week of May 6

Monday, May 6 - SSR.  Students should be finishing their SSR books within the next two weeks.  On Monday, May 20 students will have an SSR comprehension test.
Tuesday, May 7 - Logical Fallacies review and commercial project work.
Wednesday, May 8 - Declaration of Independence (from Patterns book Chapter 14).  Review the document from a logical perspective.  What are Jefferson's premises?  What type of reasoning does he use (inductive or deductive)?  
Thursday, May 9 - Finish the Declaration of Independence.  Review Kite Runner in preparation for final test
Friday, May 10 - Kite Runner Final Test.  When test is finished, students can work on commercial project or SSR books

Lesson Plans - Week of April 15

Monday, April 15 - On descriptive essay, highlight similes and metaphors in blue, allusions and personification in yellow, and tone words that make the essay subjective in green.  Turn in essays and read SSR books for 20-25 minutes.  Take Kite Runner open book 5-7 quiz (10 short answer questions) - 10 minutes
Tuesday, April 16 - IOWA Testing - see the postings on the front office windows to find your testing room number.  Bring your Kite Runner Book to read during the extra testing time. 
Wednesday, April 17 - Kite Runner SSR -  Read through Chapter 12.  Chapter 1-12 test on Friday.  
Thursday, April 18 - Patterns book - Introduce Cause and Effect Chapter 10.  See power point uploaded below.  Take notes on pages 321-332.  Read the student sample essay together as a class.  Review the photo on page 337 and write a potential cause/effect for this incident.  Read all three assigned essays and write a list of causes and effects outlined by the author.  Be ready to discuss on Friday.  
Friday, April 19 - Review cause/effect practice.  Correct and review quizzes 1-4 and 5-7.  Take a Ch. 1-12 clicker test.

Lesson Plans - Week of April 8

Monday, April 8 - SSR - Complete a journal entry that specifically states the pages numbers you read and what's happening in the book
Tuesday, April 9 - Return Hamlet books, pick up The Kite Runner.  Students will be introduced to the novel, the setting, and the author.  This novel will be read mostly outside of class by students at a pace provided in class.  The quiz for Chapters 1-3 is on Friday.  
Wednesday, April 10 - Patterns book Chapter 7  - Description.  Watch the power point below.  
Thursday, April 11 - Discussion of the three assigned essays from the Patterns book (see the power point below).  Begin working on descriptive essay (due Monday)
Friday, April 12 - Kite Runner Chapters 1-4 quiz, Read Chapters 5-7 for a quiz on Monday.

Tuesday through Friday - Patterns Book Assignments. In preparation for writing your own personal narrative essay, complete the following reading and writing assignments during the week. Write rough drafts of your responses on paper or type them up at home.  On Friday you will submit your responses on Blackboard using Safe Assign.

Tuesday, February 26 - Hamlet Character Mind Map - Create a mind map using the following characters:  Hamlet, Polonius, Claudius, Gertrude, Ophelia, Laertes, Horatio, Fortenbras, Rosecrantz & Guildenstern.  Draw shapes and put the character's name in the middle along with a brief description.  Draw lines between the characters and write connections on those lines.

Tuesday, January 29 - SSR - Students will be seated with classmates who are reading the same SSR book.  
Wednesday, January 30 - Begin Hamlet!  Overview of Shakespeare's language, life, and theater (from the preface xiii-liii)
Thursday, January 31 - Act 1 - We will read aloud (volunteers are much appreciated) and discuss.  If time permits, we will watch a couple of scenes from Act 1.  
Friday, February 1 - Patterns Book Chapter 1.  Read in class:  "Cutting and Pasting:  A Senior Thesis by (insert name)" on pages 17-19.  Complete a 7 question comprehension check focused on finding the author's claims, evidence, and explanations.  Read silently copies of:  "A Supreme Sotomayor:  How My Country Has Caught Up to Me" on pages 21-23.  Read the annotated copy of the "Cutting and Pasting" article on pages 24-25.  Annotate your own copy of the Sotomayor article.

Lesson Plans - Week of January 21, 2013

Monday, January 21 - MLK Day - No School
Tuesday, January 22 - Course Syllabus (parent signature page due Friday), explanation of SSR, Review Pride Matrix, Writing Sample:  What is Mott Pride and describe how you demonstrate Mott Pride.  
Wednesday, January 23 -  Fish Oil and College Debt Bubble articles/questions/writing assignment.  Due Friday
Thursday, January 24 - Textbooks and paperbacks assigned.  Review SSR Books and request selections for SSR Round 1.  
Friday, January 25 - Read "What's in a Name?" from the blue Patterns book.  Review questions and format for the book from pages 4-9.  
Blackboard Assignments:  submit a revised "Fish Oil" article paragraph and answer the "Journal Entry" question from page 8 of the Patterns book.  Blackboard will be open until midnight on Sunday for these two assignments.  Remember - your blackboard login is wcs and your student number (wcs123456) and your password is the last four digits of your home phone.  Once on Blackboard, be sure to click on Semester 2 English.  You'll find the assignments under "content" on the left.  Type responses in Microsoft Word (or another word processing program) and then attach them.  Do not type responses in the "content" box.
